Stanford Students Create a Lightsaber Dueling Robot
The title alone makes for unbelievably fantastic Internet. Thankfully the students at Stanford University have only created the arm of their sword (lightsaber) fighting (dueling) robot. I’m not sure if the world would be safe if a robot could recreate lightsaber battles and move around a room.
There is some pretty cool stuff happening here. They’re using a Microsoft Kinect to help the robot track it’s opponents sword in 3d space and with that data it can either attack or defend.

Geminoid-DK - Humanoid Robot
I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a horrible idea. A professor in Denmark has created a robot that looks like him. It has a breathing patter, it blinks it can tilt it’s head and in the still when you glance at it, it looks like a human. It even has facial hair.
What the hell is this guy thinking. He created a robot that looks like a human. He has doomed us all.
This Dancing Robot Is Terrifying
HRP-4C sounds like the name of a Nokia cellphone but is actually the name of a humanoid robot that can be programed to move and dance just like a human. It’s really creepy the way this thing moves. At a glance, or in low light it could be confused for an actual person. My biggest fear is that someone hooks this thing up with ASIMO AI, then this thing could start learning to move on it’s own and really start causing trouble.
Remember, just because it looks a little bit like RoboCop, doesn’t mean it’s going to protect you… eventually it’s going to try and kill you.

Nao: A Robot Deception Expert
I don’t know the scientific reason behind a creating a robot capable of detecting human emotion. I don’t. I can tell you that any robot who knows when we are happy and when we are terrified for our lives is not worth building.
Nao is able to detect human emotions through a series of non-verbal “clues”, such as body-language and facial expressions, and becomes more adept at reading a person’s mood through prolonged interaction.
This understanding, along with a set of basic rules about what is “good” and “bad” for it, allow the robot to indicate whether it is “sad” or “happy”.
If that wasn’t bad enough, it can detect, pick up, and move objects that get in its way when it’s walking and it can stand up by itself after it’s been knocked over. It can also communicate with other Nao robots via infrared, wifi and voice.
This robot is going to kill us. It’s going to feign emotion and when it detects that we are at ease with it, it will strike.

I fear for the lives of the astronauts aboard the ISS. In space, no one can hear you scream… at least that’s the rumor.

Robonaut 2
Robonaut sounds like its a robot from space, when it’s actually a robot for space. NASA and GM have teamed up to make the most frightening thing imaginable. Sure, on NASA and GM think its a good idea. GM needs the government money because they make cars nobody wants, and NASA knows how expensive it is to train a human to do things in space. The problem comes when the robot no longer want’s to listen to us.
“This cutting-edge robotics technology holds great promise, not only for NASA, but also for the nation,” said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “I’m very excited about the new opportunities for human and robotic exploration these versatile robots provide across a wide range of applications.”
A “wide range of applications.” Like, hunting down mankind, enslaving mankind, exterminating mankind. Things like that?
GM says it’s going to use Robonaut in its plants to help make safer cars.What does a robot know about human safety? Also I wouldn’t give it access to machinery. It’s just going to start building friends. And Robonaut may say it needs more robots to make safer cars but it’s actually building an army. An army that can build things and doesn’t need to sleep. Great job.

Next-Generation Robots Ready for Combat
Robots, robots, robots. They’re going to kill us, we all know it’s going to happen. It’s far more likely than a zombie attack, and I’ve come to accept that. I do my part in preventing the robot uprising by NOT building robots and sending them off to war.
The same can’t be said for Foster-Miller and (hilariously named) iRobot. Both companies received hundreds of millions of dollars to build robots to put on the front lines in Afghanistan. Really a company named iRobot makes robots for the military? What happened to “A robot may not injure a human being?”

ASMIO Avoids Objects, Plays Frogger
This is the scariest thing you’ll see all week. The good people at Honda have decided that obstacle avoidance in their robots was a good feature. The robot can calculate the size and location of regular and irregular shapes. It can even find a target and follow it, even after it has been moved, while still avoiding objects.
What a terrible idea. So now when a robot is chasing me and I throw some garbage cans behind me it can spot those and make proper course adjustments. It was bad enough when Honda added running and the ability to climb steps but we humans are running out of ways to escape from these things. Mental note, everyone stock up on sledge hammers, they may be our only hope.
